New Orleans, one of America's most culturally rich and unique cities, was ravaged this past summer by one of the most forceful hurricanes in our history. Though the floodwaters have long since subsided, the hurricane left massive destruction in its wake, leaving New Orleans, and the entire Gulf Coast region, in a struggle for its very survival. The city that has given so much to the musical, artistic, culinary, and cultural life of America needs our help. Vineyarders have always felt a special connection to “The Big Easy,” the land of red beans and Zulu queens, second lines and carnival time, and now’s our chance to extend a hand and open our hearts. Vineyard Gumbo will showcase the vibrant musical and culinary traditions of New Orleans and Acadiana in a series of affiliated island events, commencing with a “Second Line Parade,” and including concerts, specialty dinners and cooking demonstrations, parties, photographic exhibitions, and more. Pulsating beats of New Orleans’ dance halls and street parades, and tantalizing aromas and tastes of New Orleans’ simmering gumbo pots will appear at a variety of venues around the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Net proceeds of Vineyard Gumbo will benefit the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic, which provides essential medical services and financial support to the New Orleans musicians and their families, and other organizations helping the people of New Orleans to preserve the rich culture of the Crescent City in these critical times. We look forward to seeing you at the festival! As musical, culinary and art events are added to our calendar www.vineyardgumbo.com will be updated. Vineyard Gumbo needs your help in any way you can give it — whether as a gift of money, time, or housing for our visiting musicians and chefs. Please return the Printable Contribution Form with your contribution or other offer of help. |
